Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Find Relief from IBS with Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the digestive tract, causing discomfort and disruptions in daily life. It can lead to symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. For many people, IBS symptoms can significantly worsen due to pelvic floor dysfunction, which contributes to improper bowel movements and other digestive issues.

Pelvic floor physical therapy offers a holistic approach to treating IBS by addressing the nervous system, lifestyle behaviour modifications, pelvic floor dysfunction, visceral motility, breathing impairments, pressure management, and posture, just to name a few.

At Beyond Basics, we specialize in pelvic floor physical therapy to help relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Our goal is to improve your digestive health and quality of life by treating the root causes of your symptoms.

What Causes IBS?

IBS is often triggered by many factors, including stress, food sensitivities, or changes in the digestive system. It can also be confused with celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease since the symptoms can be similar. People with IBS commonly experience frequent abdominal pain, bloating, and irregular bowel movements. The symptoms can vary widely, making it difficult to diagnose IBS for some individuals.

While the exact cause of IBS is unclear, pelvic floor dysfunction can play a significant role in aggravating the symptoms. The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles located at the base of your pelvis, forming a hammock-like structure. These muscles stretch from the pubic bone at the front to the tailbone at the back and also extend between the sits bones on either side. The pelvic floor muscles support the bladder, intestines, and the uterus.

When the pelvic floor muscles are too tight or uncoordinated, it can impact digestion resulting in symptoms such as difficulty with bowel movements, bloating, and abdominal pain. Pelvic floor physical therapy can help alleviate these symptoms by improving the function of these muscles and promoting better digestive health.

What to Expect During Your Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Sessions

During Your Initial Appointment

Your first session will begin with a detailed discussion of your IBS symptoms and how they are affecting your life. We’ll conduct a comprehensive assessment of your pelvic floor muscles, checking for any dysfunctions that might be contributing to your digestive issues. This may involve a gentle physical examination to evaluate muscle strength, tension, and coordination. Based on this evaluation, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan that targets the underlying causes of your IBS symptoms.

We’ll explain each step of the process so you know exactly what to expect and ensure you feel comfortable throughout the appointment.

During Your Additional Appointments

In subsequent sessions, we’ll guide you through exercises and techniques designed to improve pelvic floor function. This includes hands-on therapy, specialized exercises, and relaxation methods to help relieve your IBS symptoms. Each session builds on the progress made in previous appointments, gradually improving your muscle control and digestive health.

With time and consistency, you’ll experience less discomfort and more control over your bowel movements, helping to relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and improving your overall well-being.

After a life changing surgery back in 2013, I dealt with chronic pelvic and lower back pain that had impacted and hindered me for years. At one point, I lost all hope that I would ever be able to be rid of it. Then, I had the fortune of coming across Beyond Basics and meeting a wonderful physical therapist in the form of Kiko. After nearly 13 yrs of dealing with this pain, I am happy to say that it is completely gone after my treatment with Kiko. Because of her and Beyond Basics, I am now able to enjoy life so much more and for that, I am eternally gratefully. Coming here was truly a life changing experience.

I had a great experience working with Emily Moore for pre-op PT. She created an incredibly warm and inclusive environment and helped me feel comfortable from the start. In just a few sessions, she really helped me have a better understanding of my symptoms and how to best manage them. She gave me helpful tips to integrate into my daily routine and I noticed results almost immediately. I am looking forward to resuming sessions with her again after surgical recovery. The front desk and administrative staff were wonderful as well. I highly recommend working with Emily!

I recently saw Kiko for regular PT sessions following a c-section delivery and HIGHLY recommend her, she's the best!! We worked on regaining both pelvic floor and core strength, and while I'm happy both have improved significantly in the months since my delivery, I was sad to have 'graduated' PT as I really enjoyed my sessions with Kiko - she's a pleasure to work with and learn from! I also had a good experience with Beyond Basics as a practice - Veronica at the front desk is very sweet!

Staff is friendly and efficient. Kiko is so easy to talk to, super informative, genuinely caring & kind, very knowledgeable about the pelvic floor as well as how other areas of the body work with it, and she also gave a great referral when my condition seemed to need treatment outside of her scope of practice. I highly recommend Kiko!
