How do you know what type of Pilates is right for you?
Pilates is a broad term that encompasses everything from mat-based fitness classes to HIIT workouts on a Megaformer, as well as one-on-one sessions focused on mind-body awareness and breathing. If you have an injury or a special condition, it’s important to understand the different types of Pilates available to address your specific needs.
Clinical or Therapeutic Pilates involves working with an instructor who has specialized training beyond the basic certification. These instructors tailor exercises specifically for you rather than providing a pre-programmed sequence like in a general fitness class. Rehabilitative Pilates typically involves working with a physical therapist who integrates Pilates-based exercises into your overall care plan to address your injury.
In general, whether you have an injury or not, it’s crucial to know the qualifications of your instructor and the types of Pilates offered at a studio. This information will help you choose the most suitable Pilates practice for your health and fitness goals.
What To Expect with Pilates for the Pelvic Floor
During Your Initial Pelvic Floor Pilates Appointment
During the initial session with a rehabilitative Pilates practitioner, the patient will undergo a thorough assessment of their mobility, strength, movement, and posture. This evaluation helps the practitioner identify any physical limitations or imbalances that need attention. The practitioner will listen closely to the patient’s specific goals, whether it’s improving core strength, recovering from childbirth, managing pelvic pain, or addressing other concerns. Based on this assessment, a personalized Pilates program will be crafted to meet the patient’s unique needs. The practitioner will recommend a consistent practice of at least once a week, with the option to increase to twice a week if possible, to support steady improvement and long-term progress in pelvic health.

During Your Additional Pilates Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Appointments
During additional appointments with a rehabilitative Pilates practitioner, the patient will continue to build upon the progress made in earlier sessions. The practitioner will regularly reassess the patient’s mobility, strength, posture, and movement to ensure the program is evolving alongside their improvements. These sessions will focus on refining techniques and further strengthening the pelvic floor and core, while also deepening the integration of movement and breath. As the patient’s needs change, the practitioner will adjust the exercises accordingly to keep the program aligned with their recovery or fitness goals. Consistent practice, ideally one to two times per week, will be encouraged to ensure continued progress and support for long-term pelvic health.
