What is Healthy Bladder Function?
A healthy bladder typically demonstrates the following patterns:
- Urinating six to eight times throughout a 24-hour span
- Each urination lasting more than 8 seconds
- Beginning urination is a simple process
- The sensation of needing to urinate disappears after using the restroom
- People under 60 may only need to urinate once during the night, whereas individuals over 60 or pregnant women may need to urinate twice at night
Symptoms of Bladder Dysfunction and Urinary Incontinence
- Pain around the bladder or urethra, either generally or when urinating
- Leaking urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising
- Leakage on the way to the restroom
- A frequent, intense urge to urinate even with a nearly empty bladder
- Urinating more often than necessary
- A weak or slow urine stream
- A strong urge to urinate post-exercise
- The sudden need to urinate during or after sexual activity, sometimes accompanied by urine leakage during orgasm
