How Your Pelvic Floor Affects Bladder Health

How Your Pelvic Floor Affects Bladder Health

Your pelvic floor muscles play an important role in supporting your bladder function and managing lower urinary tract symptoms. When these muscles have too much tension and/or not enough strength to function properly, they can exacerbate bladder-related conditions.

  • Tense Muscles: Overly tense pelvic floor and abdominal muscles can lead to increased bladder pressure.
  • Weak Muscles: Weakness in the pelvic floor can compromise bladder support, leading to increased bladder pressure.

How Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Can Help

At Beyond Basics, our holistic pelvic floor physical therapy targets the root causes of bladder pressure and associated conditions. By addressing pelvic floor dysfunction and improving your muscle function, our treatment approach can:
  • Relieve pain caused by tension or spasms in the pelvic area
  • Improve bladder function and reduce lower urinary tract symptoms
  • Help alleviate bladder pain caused by interstitial cystitis also known as painful bladder syndrome, urinary tract infections (UTIs), overactive bladder, or other conditions
  • Provide long-term tools to maintain comfort and control

What to Expect During Your Sessions

During Your Initial Appointment

Your first visit begins with a detailed physical exam to assess your symptoms and medical history. We focus on understanding what triggers your bladder pain or pressure, including factors such as diet, bowel function, sexual health, or past infections like a urinary tract infection. A physical assessment will target the pelvic floor muscles to identify any increased tensions, muscle weakness, or other dysfunctions contributing to your symptoms.

We will explain each step to make sure you feel comfortable and informed throughout the evaluation.

During Your Follow-Up Sessions

Our physical therapy sessions are based on your specific needs. They include gentle manual techniques to relax tense pelvic floor muscles, targeted exercises to improve strength, and strategies to manage symptoms like urinary frequency or discomfort as the bladder fills. The goal is to provide relief, improve your quality of life, and empower you with lasting solutions.

After a life changing surgery back in 2013, I dealt with chronic pelvic and lower back pain that had impacted and hindered me for years. At one point, I lost all hope that I would ever be able to be rid of it. Then, I had the fortune of coming across Beyond Basics and meeting a wonderful physical therapist in the form of Kiko. After nearly 13 yrs of dealing with this pain, I am happy to say that it is completely gone after my treatment with Kiko. Because of her and Beyond Basics, I am now able to enjoy life so much more and for that, I am eternally gratefully. Coming here was truly a life changing experience.

I had a great experience working with Emily Moore for pre-op PT. She created an incredibly warm and inclusive environment and helped me feel comfortable from the start. In just a few sessions, she really helped me have a better understanding of my symptoms and how to best manage them. She gave me helpful tips to integrate into my daily routine and I noticed results almost immediately. I am looking forward to resuming sessions with her again after surgical recovery. The front desk and administrative staff were wonderful as well. I highly recommend working with Emily!

Absolutely adored working with Melanie Rocchio. She's truly an expert at her craft and immediately puts you at ease. It's hard to make PFPT a comfortable process but she did. If you need PFPT, go see Melanie--I'll definitely be a returning client if I need further treatment.

I recently saw Kiko for regular PT sessions following a c-section delivery and HIGHLY recommend her, she's the best!! We worked on regaining both pelvic floor and core strength, and while I'm happy both have improved significantly in the months since my delivery, I was sad to have 'graduated' PT as I really enjoyed my sessions with Kiko - she's a pleasure to work with and learn from! I also had a good experience with Beyond Basics as a practice - Veronica at the front desk is very sweet!

Staff is friendly and efficient. Kiko is so easy to talk to, super informative, genuinely caring & kind, very knowledgeable about the pelvic floor as well as how other areas of the body work with it, and she also gave a great referral when my condition seemed to need treatment outside of her scope of practice. I highly recommend Kiko!

Frequently Asked Questions

How can pelvic floor therapy help with bladder pressure?
Pelvic floor physical therapy relieves bladder pressure by addressing any tension, spasms, or weakness in your pelvic floor muscles, abdominal muscles, back muscles, and hip muscles. This therapy improves bladder function, reduces urinary frequency, and provides lasting relief from bladder pressure.
Can diet and lifestyle changes improve bladder pressure symptoms?
Yes, certain foods and drinks can irritate the bladder, sometimes making symptoms worse. A physical therapist can guide you on dietary adjustments and lifestyle changes to complement your pelvic floor therapy, helping to reduce discomfort.
How is interstitial cystitis related to the bladder?
Interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition causing bladder pain, pressure, and lower urinary tract symptoms. It is often linked to inflammation of the bladder tissue and can significantly affect your quality of life.
Is bladder pressure always caused by a medical condition?
No, not always. Bladder pressure can sometimes result from muscle tension, poor posture, or lifestyle factors rather than a specific medical condition such as interstitial cystitis. A thorough evaluation by a pelvic floor physical therapist can help identify the root cause of your symptoms.
How long does it take to see results?
Most patients experience improvement in symptoms within a few sessions. Consistency in your physical therapy leads to the best outcomes.
