How Pelvic Congestion Occurs
- Varicose Veins: When the veins in your pelvis become swollen they can lead to pelvic varicose veins. This results in swelling, pain, and pressure in the affected area.
- Pelvic Vein Dysfunction: When the veins in your pelvis don’t function properly, it causes pelvic venous insufficiency, leading to blood pooling and creating painful congestion.
- Ovarian Vein Issues: The ovarian veins can also be affected, leading to symptoms of pelvic congestion.
- Hormonal Factors: Hormonal changes, especially during pregnancy, can weaken vein walls, contributing to the development of pelvic congestion syndrome, including dilated pelvic veins.
How Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Can Help
- Improving Circulation: Specialized exercises help improve blood flow in the pelvic veins, reducing congestion and pain.
- Strengthening Pelvic Muscles: Strengthening the muscles that support your pelvic organs can reduce pressure on the veins, alleviating symptoms.
- Relieving Pressure on the Pelvic Veins: Our hands-on therapy techniques can help ease the tension in the surrounding muscles and tissues, reducing pain and pressure.
- Reducing Swelling and Pain: Through targeted therapies, we can decrease the swelling in the pelvic area, relieving pain and discomfort.
- Prevention: Helping improve mobility, education on best movement practices, soft tissue work, and other preventative measures.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can physical therapy help with pelvic congestion syndrome?
How is pelvic congestion syndrome diagnosed?
While diagnostic imaging like pelvic ultrasound, MRI, or venography confirms the presence of pelvic varicose veins, physical therapy evaluations focus on muscle tension, weakness, or nerve issues that may also cause pelvic discomfort. Our team of physical therapists can offer insights into how muscle dysfunction contributes to your condition and guide your treatment plan accordingly.
