What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that appear just beneath the surface of the skin—most commonly in the legs and feet. They occur when the valves inside your veins weaken or stop working properly, causing blood to pool and the veins to swell.

Although varicose veins are common, they can lead to aching, heaviness, and fatigue in the legs that make standing, walking, or sitting for long periods uncomfortable. Fortunately, physical therapy offers an effective, non-invasive way to relieve symptoms and support long-term vascular health.

How Physical Therapy Helps

How Physical Therapy Helps

Physical therapy takes a whole-body approach to managing varicose veins by improving circulation, reducing venous pressure, and restoring healthy movement patterns. At Beyond Basics, we view the body as an interconnected system, assessing how your legs, pelvis, and core work together to support blood flow and stability.

Your personalized plan may include a combination of orthopedic strengthening, pelvic floor retraining, manual therapy techniques, and movement education and lifestyle strategies designed to enhance circulation, relieve discomfort, and prevent future vein issues. This integrated, evidence-based approach helps you move more freely, feel more supported, and build a foundation for lasting vascular health.

Orthopedic Physical Therapy

Orthopedic physical therapy focuses on the muscles, joints, and movement patterns that influence how blood flows through the lower body.
Your therapist will help you:

  • Strengthen the calf, thigh, and hip muscles that act as natural pumps for venous return
  • Improve ankle and hip mobility to reduce stiffness and promote circulation
  • Correct posture and alignment to minimize pressure on veins while standing or sitting
  • Integrate progressive exercise routines that keep your legs active and strong

By enhancing muscle strength and movement efficiency, these exercises help reduce pain, swelling, and heaviness—while preventing symptoms from worsening over time.

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

The pelvic floor forms the foundation of your core and plays an important role in circulation and pressure balance throughout the lower body.
When the pelvic floor is weak, tight, or uncoordinated, it can disrupt blood flow and increase strain on the veins in your legs.

Pelvic floor physical therapy can help by:

  • Teaching diaphragmatic breathing and core coordination to reduce intra-abdominal pressure
  • Restoring proper pelvic muscle tone to support circulation and stability
  • Addressing contributing factors like constipation, posture, and muscle tension
  • Promoting efficient movement and improved vascular flow from the pelvis to the legs

This deeper layer of therapy complements orthopedic techniques and enhances overall results—especially for patients whose symptoms are linked to pregnancy, chronic sitting, or pressure imbalances.

Orthopedic Physical Therapy
Manual Therapy & Circulatory Techniques

Manual Therapy & Circulatory Techniques

Manual therapy uses gentle, hands-on techniques to release restrictions, ease muscle tension, and improve blood and lymphatic flow.

Depending on your needs, your therapist may use:

  • Soft tissue mobilization to relieve tightness and encourage healthy circulation
  • Myofascial release to restore flexibility and reduce discomfort
  • Manual lymphatic drainage to address swelling and fluid retention
  • Joint mobilization to improve range of motion and movement efficiency

These treatments help restore a sense of lightness and ease in the legs while supporting overall vein health.

Movement Education & Lifestyle Strategies

Sustainable improvement happens when healthy habits continue beyond the clinic.

Your therapist will teach practical, easy-to-implement strategies, including:

  • Taking movement and circulation breaks throughout your day
  • Using proper elevation and positioning to reduce swelling
  • Wearing compression garments when appropriate and learning how to fit them correctly
  • Guidance on hydration, footwear, and activity pacing to support daily comfort

Small lifestyle adjustments, combined with targeted therapy, can significantly reduce symptoms and improve your overall vascular health.

These techniques help reduce swelling, relieve pain, and prevent symptoms from returning.

Why Choose Beyond Basics for Varicose Veins

Living with varicose veins can be uncomfortable, frustrating, and sometimes discouraging—especially when you’ve tried different treatments without lasting relief. At Beyond Basics Physical Therapy, we understand that varicose veins are more than a cosmetic concern; they can affect your confidence, movement, and overall quality of life. Most importantly, we make sure you feel heard, supported, and empowered every step of the way.

60-minute, one-on-one sessions with your physical therapist

We never rush your care. Each session is a full hour with a licensed physical therapist, giving us time to listen, evaluate, and treat the underlying factors contributing to your symptoms. You’ll receive our full attention in a calm, supportive environment designed to help you heal.

Dual expertise in orthopedic and pelvic floor therapy

Many clinics treat circulation or muscle issues in isolation. At Beyond Basics, we combine both specialties to address the muscle, posture, and pressure patterns that influence vein health. This integrative approach allows us to improve blood flow, reduce discomfort, and prevent future strain more effectively.

Whole-body approach that goes beyond symptom relief

We look at how your legs, pelvis, and core work together—not just where your veins are visible. By identifying how posture, movement habits, and pressure imbalances contribute to poor circulation, we help you achieve lasting relief rather than temporary fixes.

Manual therapy and movement-based care tailored to you

Every treatment plan is individualized. Your sessions may include gentle manual therapy, strengthening, and guided movement education to improve venous return and reduce swelling. We also provide home strategies so you can continue supporting your recovery between visits.

Education and lifestyle support that empowers you

We believe small changes make a big difference. Your therapist will teach you how to optimize your daily habits—like sitting, standing, and stretching—to maintain better circulation and ease leg fatigue throughout your day.

Collaborative care with your broader medical team

We regularly collaborate with vascular specialists, OB/GYNs, primary care physicians, pain management experts, physiatrists, cardiologists, and other specialists to ensure your care is coordinated and comprehensive. Together, we create a plan that supports both your comfort and your long-term health goals.

Compassionate care that restores comfort and confidence

Our goal isn’t just to reduce pain or swelling—it’s to help you move with ease, feel stronger, and trust your body again. From the moment you walk in, you’ll be treated with empathy, respect, and the understanding that your symptoms are real and manageable.

I recently saw Kiko for regular PT sessions following a c-section delivery and HIGHLY recommend her, she's the best!! We worked on regaining both pelvic floor and core strength, and while I'm happy both have improved significantly in the months since my delivery, I was sad to have 'graduated' PT as I really enjoyed my sessions with Kiko - she's a pleasure to work with and learn from! I also had a good experience with Beyond Basics as a practice - Veronica at the front desk is very sweet!

Frequently Asked Questions

— Beyond Basics PT | Pelvic Floor Therapy NYC.

Can physical therapy help with leg pain from varicose veins?
Yes. Strengthening the muscles that assist blood flow can significantly reduce pain, swelling,
and heaviness associated with varicose veins. Regular movement and circulation exercises improve comfort and help prevent future symptoms.
Will I need to wear compression stockings?
Compression can be helpful when used correctly. Your therapist can guide you on choosing the right type, fit, and when to wear them for maximum benefit.
Can pelvic floor therapy really help with circulation in the legs?
Absolutely. The pelvic floor supports pressure regulation throughout your lower body. Coordinating your pelvic floor, breathing, and posture can improve blood flow and relieve pressure in the veins of your legs.
What’s the difference between spider veins and varicose veins?
Spider veins are small and close to the skin’s surface, while varicose veins are larger, often raised, and more likely to cause discomfort. Physical therapy targets the muscle and circulatory factors that contribute to varicose veins.
Is exercise safe if I have varicose veins?
Yes, and it’s highly encouraged. Your therapist will guide you through safe, low-impact exercises that improve circulation without overloading the veins.
