Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)

EDS-POTS-and-MCAS-hero
Living with chronic conditions like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) can feel overwhelming — especially when symptoms seem to come from every direction. Pain, fatigue, dizziness, digestive issues, and unpredictable flare-ups often make daily life difficult. Many patients spend years searching for answers, only to feel dismissed or misunderstood.

At Beyond Basics, we specialize in treating complex cases with a focus on the whole person, not just isolated symptoms. Some patients come to us with a single diagnosis, while others face the overlap of what’s often called the “trifecta.” Each condition brings its own challenges, but when they occur together, symptoms can compound in ways that affect every part of life.

If you’ve been searching for answers, take the first step toward compassionate, expert care.

Common Symptoms and Challenges of EDS, POTS,
and MCAS

EDS, POTS, and MCAS show up in unique ways, and no two patients experience them exactly the same. For some, the symptoms are mild but frustrating. For others, they can be life-altering — making it hard to work, exercise, or even get through daily routines. What they all share is unpredictability: one day you may feel almost “normal,” and the next, your body feels like it’s working against you.

At Beyond Basics, we understand how discouraging it can be to live with symptoms that don’t always make sense or that get overlooked by providers. That’s why we take the time to break down each condition, explain how it can present, and design care that adapts to your body’s needs.

Common Symptoms and Challenges
Heart Pain

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)

  • Joint hypermobility, sprains, or dislocations
  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain
  • Fatigue from overworked muscles
  • Skin fragility, easy bruising
  • Pelvic floor issues such as prolapse, incontinence, or pelvic pain

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)

  • Rapid heart rate and dizziness upon standing
  • Fainting or “near fainting” spells
  • Exercise intolerance and chronic fatigue
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
  • Digestive discomfort (bloating, nausea, abdominal pain)

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)

  • Flushing, hives, or swelling
  • GI upset such as cramping, diarrhea, or reflux
  • Wheezing or throat tightness
  • Sensitivities to foods, medications, or environmental triggers
  • Sudden systemic flare-ups or anaphylaxis-like episodes

Wondering if physical therapy can help your symptoms? Let’s talk.

Living with the EDS, POTS, and MCAS Trifecta

When EDS, POTS, and MCAS occur together, symptoms often feed into one another in ways that can feel relentless. Weak connective tissue from EDS can make it harder for blood vessels to regulate circulation, worsening POTS. Circulatory instability from POTS can then trigger mast cell flare-ups, making MCAS symptoms worse. And immune overactivation from MCAS adds to inflammation, pain, and fatigue — amplifying EDS and POTS challenges.

For many patients, this overlap creates a cycle that impacts nearly every part of life. You may find yourself:

  • Struggling with pain and joint instability that limit mobility
  • Experiencing dizziness, brain fog, or fatigue that interrupts work, school, or social life
  • Managing unpredictable allergic-type reactions or sensitivities that make planning difficult
  • Dealing with pelvic floor issues like incontinence or pain that add another layer of stress
  • Feeling anxious, isolated, or dismissed after years of searching for answers
At Beyond Basics, we don’t view these conditions in isolation. We understand how they connect — and how they affect your body, mind, and daily life. Our goal is to break the cycle by providing care that is comprehensive, compassionate, and tailored to your unique presentation.

After a life changing surgery back in 2013, I dealt with chronic pelvic and lower back pain that had impacted and hindered me for years. At one point, I lost all hope that I would ever be able to be rid of it. Then, I had the fortune of coming across Beyond Basics and meeting a wonderful physical therapist in the form of Kiko. After nearly 13 yrs of dealing with this pain, I am happy to say that it is completely gone after my treatment with Kiko. Because of her and Beyond Basics, I am now able to enjoy life so much more and for that, I am eternally gratefully. Coming here was truly a life changing experience.

I had a great experience working with Emily Moore for pre-op PT. She created an incredibly warm and inclusive environment and helped me feel comfortable from the start. In just a few sessions, she really helped me have a better understanding of my symptoms and how to best manage them. She gave me helpful tips to integrate into my daily routine and I noticed results almost immediately. I am looking forward to resuming sessions with her again after surgical recovery. The front desk and administrative staff were wonderful as well. I highly recommend working with Emily!

Absolutely adored working with Melanie Rocchio. She's truly an expert at her craft and immediately puts you at ease. It's hard to make PFPT a comfortable process but she did. If you need PFPT, go see Melanie--I'll definitely be a returning client if I need further treatment.

I recently saw Kiko for regular PT sessions following a c-section delivery and HIGHLY recommend her, she's the best!! We worked on regaining both pelvic floor and core strength, and while I'm happy both have improved significantly in the months since my delivery, I was sad to have 'graduated' PT as I really enjoyed my sessions with Kiko - she's a pleasure to work with and learn from! I also had a good experience with Beyond Basics as a practice - Veronica at the front desk is very sweet!

I have worked with Beyond Basics for over 15 years. I have an underlying chronic problem that I will have to manage for the rest of my life. With their multitude of skills, Beyond Basics has given me the therapy and strategies to go from acute pelvic pain, severe back, and postural problems to being able to manage my underlying problems with resilience and support. Staff is friendly and efficient. Kiko is so easy to talk to, super informative, genuinely caring & kind, very knowledgeable about the pelvic floor as well as how other areas of the body work with it, and she also gave a great referral when my condition seemed to need treatment outside of her scope of practice. I highly recommend Kiko!

Sonali Patel at Beyond Basis is an incredibly smart, kind, and effective pelvic floor PT. She was great during our sessions and also gave me the tools to continue healing on my own, without ever pushing unnecessary visits. I’d absolutely recommend her and will definitely come back to her if anything ever comes up again.
Kiko is exactly what you want in a PT… Attentive and clearly loves what she does, all with a sense of humor. You’ll be lucky if you get her..

Frequently Asked Questions

Can physical therapy help with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)?
Yes. Physical therapy can help stabilize hypermobile joints, reduce pain, and improve strength and function in patients with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). At Beyond Basics, we create customized exercise programs and pelvic floor therapy for people with EDS.
Can physical therapy help with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)?
Yes. While PT doesn’t cure POTS, physical therapy can improve circulation, build tolerance for activity, and teach pacing and breathing techniques to reduce dizziness and fatigue.
Can physical therapy help with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)?
Physical therapy does not directly treat MCAS, but it can help reduce inflammation triggers that affect movement, provide strategies to manage flare-ups, and improve overall function and quality of life.
Do you treat patients who have EDS, POTS, and MCAS together?
Yes. Many of our patients have the EDS, POTS, and MCAS trifecta, and our therapists are trained to address how these conditions overlap. We design treatment plans that support the whole body, not just individual symptoms.
What makes Beyond Basics different from other physical therapy clinics?
Unlike many PT practices that schedule short visits, our physical therapy sessions are one hour long, one-on-one with your therapist. We also bring dual expertise in both orthopedic and pelvic floor therapy, specialized autonomic and systemic support, and extensive experience with complex conditions that many clinics overlook. Our team emphasizes collaborative care with your broader medical team and a whole-person approach that focuses on function, confidence, and quality of life—not just symptoms.
Do you work with my doctors or specialists?
Yes. We regularly collaborate with rheumatologists, cardiologists, immunologists, OB/GYNs, gastroenterologists, primary care physicians, neurologists, endocrinologists, urologists, pain specialists, and mental health providers to make sure your care is seamless and truly comprehensive.
