Care For All Bodies
For almost two decades, Beyond Basics has been providing thorough care for pelvic pain and pelvic floor dysfunction to patients of all ages in Downtown. When we first began, very few therapists around the globe were trained in pelvic floor physical therapy, and their approach was quite limited. Today, our practice is recognized as one of the few worldwide that integrates care for the pelvic region with the rest of the body, allowing us to approach treatment in a way that promotes whole-body healing for each individual.
Thanks to the vast expertise of our physical therapists and the broad range of specialized certifications they hold, we can guide you toward relief and improved function, regardless of where discomfort or dysfunction appears in your body. Each treatment plan is tailored to your specific condition and personal goals, ensuring the most effective care for your Downtown journey to recovery.
Beyond Basics Physical Therapy is unwavering in our dedication to fostering and maintaining a culture of diversity, equality, and inclusion. Every person seeking care in Downtown is welcomed and respected. Actions that compromise the safety and inclusiveness of our environment are not tolerated, ensuring a supportive space for all patients.
We Understand Pelvic Floor Health
Anatomy of the Pelvic Floor
Function of the Pelvic Floor
- Bladder
- Uterus
- Rectum
- Bowel and bladder movements
- Functionality during sexual intercourse
- Blood circulation in the pelvic area
By comprehensively understanding the wide range of pelvic floor functions, we are able to design effective therapeutic strategies tailored to correct and restore proper function.
Causes Of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
-
Childbirth:
Trauma sustained during delivery, such as prolonged labor or instrumental assistance, can influence the strength and coordination of the pelvic floor muscles.
-
Chronic Constipation:
Long-term straining during bowel movements can place excessive tension on the pelvic floor, eventually reducing its effectiveness.
-
Pelvic Surgery:
Prior surgical procedures in the pelvic region may result in scar tissue formation or nerve disruptions that impact pelvic floor functionality.
-
Age-related Changes:
With advancing age, pelvic floor muscles can naturally lose tone and resilience, contributing to decreased support and stability.
-
Obesity:
Persistent additional weight can put continuous pressure on the pelvic floor, potentially weakening the muscles over time.

Individualized Treatment Plans
Our skilled therapists employ a broad spectrum of treatment options, combining internal and external manual therapies including myofascial release, trigger point release, connective tissue techniques, and craniosacral therapy. When indicated, gentle mobilization of the pelvic organs themselves may be performed to support optimal function.
We frequently utilize biofeedback as a tool to guide patients in muscle retraining and provide techniques for at-home practice, ensuring continued improvement between therapy sessions.
Where appropriate, we enhance therapy with modalities such as cold laser treatment, temperature-based therapies, electrical stimulation, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation to further support healing.
Neuromuscular re-education is a central focus, with exercises carefully designed to restore strength, coordination, and functional movement for tasks like standing, walking, and sitting, fostering pain-free mobility and reducing the chance of future injury.
Finally, we work alongside referring doctors and healthcare professionals to create individualized exercise regimens. We also commit to ongoing education and professional development weekly, keeping our knowledge and skills at the forefront of pelvic floor treatment advancements.
