Pelvic floor Clitorodynia

How Your Pelvic Floor Can Cause Clitorodynia

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that support the pelvic organs and play an important role in bowel, bladder, and sexual function. When these muscles have issues, it can lead directly to conditions such as clitorodynia. Here’s how problems with the pelvic floor can lead to clitoral pain:

  • Tension and Tightness: Overly tight pelvic floor muscles can cause direct pain or increase sensitivity in the clitoral area.
  • Weak Muscles: Weakness in the pelvic floor can lead to inadequate support and increased pain during activities.
  • Muscle Spasms: Involuntary spasms in these muscles can trigger sudden, sharp pain.
  • Nerve Compression: Non optimal muscle function can compress nerves, leading to pelvic pain, which can include the clitoral region.
  • Reduced Blood Flow: Dysfunctional pelvic floor muscles can affect circulation, leading to discomfort or pain due to decreased oxygen and nutrient supply.

How Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Can Help

Clitorodynia can be a challenging condition, but with the right approach, management is possible. At Beyond Basics, we are committed to providing compassionate and effective care to help you regain control over your health and lead a happier, more comfortable life. • Improve your quality of life by reducing and eliminating your symptoms, allowing for better participation in daily activities

What to Expect During Your Sessions

During Your Initial Appointment

Your initial appointment starts with a comprehensive evaluation. We discuss your symptoms in detail, asking questions so that we can learn more about you and any pain you are experiencing. We’ll then conduct a thorough physical assessment, focusing on the areas causing discomfort. This is a hands-on evaluation from head to toe. It will most likely involve evaluating external and internal pelvic floor muscles, with the purpose being to trace your issue to its source(s) in order to reduce your pain and discomfort.

These internal manual techniques are applied to the structures of the pelvis. This includes the pelvic floor muscles, nerves, and bones. We also want you to be as comfortable as possible during the session – you have the right to refuse any treatment at any time without explanation.

During Your Additional Appointments

Each visit is customized to fit your needs. We use hands-on therapy (with your permission) and special exercises to help ease the pain and improve how well you function sexually. Our treatments focus on tackling the root causes of your clitorodynia.

After a life changing surgery back in 2013, I dealt with chronic pelvic and lower back pain that had impacted and hindered me for years. At one point, I lost all hope that I would ever be able to be rid of it. Then, I had the fortune of coming across Beyond Basics and meeting a wonderful physical therapist in the form of Kiko. After nearly 13 yrs of dealing with this pain, I am happy to say that it is completely gone after my treatment with Kiko. Because of her and Beyond Basics, I am now able to enjoy life so much more and for that, I am eternally gratefully. Coming here was truly a life changing experience.

Absolutely adored working with Melanie Rocchio. She's truly an expert at her craft and immediately puts you at ease. It's hard to make PFPT a comfortable process but she did. If you need PFPT, go see Melanie--I'll definitely be a returning client if I need further treatment.

I recently saw Kiko for regular PT sessions following a c-section delivery and HIGHLY recommend her, she's the best!! We worked on regaining both pelvic floor and core strength, and while I'm happy both have improved significantly in the months since my delivery, I was sad to have 'graduated' PT as I really enjoyed my sessions with Kiko - she's a pleasure to work with and learn from! I also had a good experience with Beyond Basics as a practice - Veronica at the front desk is very sweet!

Staff is friendly and efficient. Kiko is so easy to talk to, super informative, genuinely caring & kind, very knowledgeable about the pelvic floor as well as how other areas of the body work with it, and she also gave a great referral when my condition seemed to need treatment outside of her scope of practice. I highly recommend Kiko!

Sonali Patel at Beyond Basis is an incredibly smart, kind, and effective pelvic floor PT. She was great during our sessions and also gave me the tools to continue healing on my own, without ever pushing unnecessary visits. I’d absolutely recommend her and will definitely come back to her if anything ever comes up again.
Kiko is exactly what you want in a PT… Attentive and clearly loves what she does, all with a sense of humor. You’ll be lucky if you get her..

I went to go see Kiko for tailbone pain that I had ignored for 20 months since giving birth. She gave me a thorough assessment and explained the reasons behind the persisting pain. She looked at my body as a whole, not just the pelvic area and we are addressing other problem areas that have been causing the pain. I can’t believe how much I’ve improved even after just one session. Her bedside manners are great too and I feel very comfortable working with her. I highly recommend this place for all new mamas!

Clitorodynia is less frequently discussed than other conditions but is a recognized part of the spectrum of genital pain disorders. Many individuals experience clitoral pain at some point, with varying degrees of intensity and duration.
How can lifestyle changes help manage clitorodynia?
Making lifestyle adjustments can significantly help manage symptoms of clitorodynia. These include wearing loose clothing to reduce irritation, managing stress through relaxation techniques, and avoiding specific activities that trigger painful episodes.
How is clitorodynia diagnosed?
Diagnosis generally involves a detailed medical history and a physical examination focusing on the genital area to assess for descriptive pain characteristics and any distinct pain characteristics. It might also include tests to rule out other causes of genital pain.
What role does pelvic floor physical therapy play in treating clitorodynia?
Pelvic floor physical therapy can be extremely important for treating clitorodynia, especially when symptoms are related to pelvic floor dysfunction. Therapy often includes techniques to relax and strengthen pelvic muscles, retraining muscle coordination, and addressing other musculoskeletal factors contributing to your pain.
What specific techniques are used in pelvic floor physical therapy to treat clitoral pain?
Techniques include manual therapy to reduce muscle tightness, biofeedback to improve muscle control, exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor, and education on pain management strategies to cope with intense pain episodes and other genital pain.
Can pelvic floor physical therapy address all types of clitoral pain?
Pelvic floor physical therapy is highly effective for many cases of clitoral pain, especially those involving muscle tension and nerve issues. However, it might not fully resolve clitoral pain characteristics linked to other chronic pain disorders or unexplained clitoral pain without additional medical interventions.
