What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

If you’re going through pregnancy or postpartum recovery, pelvic floor physical therapy can be a powerful tool to help your body feel and function better. This specialized approach retrains uncoordinated pelvic floor muscles to perform as they should—reducing discomfort and improving overall function.

Many people during pregnancy or shortly after giving birth experience issues involving the pelvic floor muscles, nerves, or connective tissues. These problems often arise when the muscles are either too tight, too weak, or overworked—leading to discomfort or even pain that can impact daily life.

At Beyond Basics, we invite you to make the trip from Brooklyn for expert care. Our therapists are trained to gently mobilize your muscles, ease painful symptoms, and equip you with at-home exercises designed to support long-term healing and wellness.

What To Expect

During Your Initial Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Appointment

When you come for your first appointment at Beyond Basics, our physical therapy team will take the time to ask you detailed questions about your pregnancy or postpartum stage. This conversation will help us gain a deeper understanding of your unique situation and the symptoms you’re experiencing, allowing us to better tailor your treatment plan.

Following this discussion, we will proceed with a physical exam, a hands-on evaluation to assess your symptoms. This exam could include an assessment of both external and internal muscles, with the goal of identifying the underlying cause(s) of your pain.

We apply specialized internal manual techniques targeting the pelvic region, including the muscles, nerves, and bones (such as the coccyx). Throughout this process, your comfort is our priority, and you always have the right to refuse any treatment at any time—no explanation necessary.

Additionally, your physical therapist will introduce exercises that you can start practicing at home to aid in your recovery and overall well-being.

During Your Additional Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Appointments

Each pelvic floor physical therapy session at Beyond Basics typically lasts one hour. During this time, your physical therapist will dedicate attention to performing manual therapy, discussing your progress, answering any questions you may have, and providing at-home exercises if needed to continue your progress.

Most individuals in Brooklyn, NY start to notice noticeable improvements in their symptoms within just 8 weeks or even sooner, making this treatment approach a highly effective option for those looking to feel better and regain function.
