What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

If you’re dealing with the physical changes that often accompany pregnancy or the postpartum stage, pelvic floor physical therapy may offer relief and renewed function. This form of therapy retrains pelvic muscles that may not be working in sync, easing pain and enhancing mobility.

Muscle dysfunction of the pelvic floor is a common issue during and after pregnancy. Whether caused by tightness, weakness, or overuse, this dysfunction can interfere with daily activities and quality of life.

At Beyond Basics, we welcome clients from Jersey City seeking expert pelvic health care. Our compassionate team uses internal manual therapy and prescribes easy-to-follow home exercises, all designed to help restore comfort and physical balance.

What To Expect

During Your Initial Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Appointment

Your first visit to our physical therapy team at Beyond Basics will start with a conversation. We will ask about your pregnancy or postpartum stage, helping us understand your specific circumstances and any symptoms you may be experiencing. This information will provide the context we need to create a personalized treatment plan just for you.

After we’ve had this discussion, we will conduct a physical exam, which involves hands-on evaluation of both your external and internal muscles. The purpose of this exam is to locate the source(s) of your symptoms so that we can alleviate your pain effectively.

We apply internal manual techniques to the pelvic region, targeting muscles, nerves, and bones like the coccyx. We want you to feel as comfortable as possible during the process, and you are always free to refuse any treatment at any time without needing to explain your decision.

To support your healing process, your physical therapist will provide you with exercises to perform at home, ensuring that you continue to progress outside of the clinic.

During Your Additional Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Appointments

At Beyond Basics, every pelvic floor physical therapy appointment lasts for one hour. During this time, your therapist will perform manual therapy, track your progress, answer any of your questions, and, if needed, suggest specific exercises to practice at home to continue your recovery.

Most patients in Jersey City, NJ find that they begin to experience improvements in their symptoms within 8 weeks, though some may notice changes even sooner, offering significant relief and improved well-being.
