ShockWave Therapy for Sexual Dysfunction

Improve your sexual health with this all-natural treatment.
SoftWave-Therapy

Sexual dysfunction can affect confidence, relationships, and overall quality of life — but the good news is, there are effective, non-invasive options that can help. At Beyond Basics Physical Therapy, we integrate ShockWave Therapy (SoftWave) into comprehensive physical therapy programs to help patients experiencing sexual dysfunction improve circulation, enhance tissue repair, and restore natural function.

This gentle, evidence-based therapy is used in conjunction with pelvic floor physical therapy to address the root causes of sexual dysfunction — including circulation issues, muscle tension, nerve sensitivity, and scar tissue. Together, these treatments help patients reconnect with their bodies, relieve discomfort, and regain confidence and control.

What is ShockWave Therapy for Sexual Dysfunction?

Sexual dysfunction can stem from several interconnected causes — including limited blood flow, nerve sensitivity, muscle tightness, or scar tissue that affects pelvic circulation and tissue health. For men, this often involves challenges with arousal, reduced sensitivity, or difficulty maintaining sexual performance. These concerns are frequently linked to vascular restrictions, nerve irritation, or tissue changes within the pelvic region. For women, sexual dysfunction can include decreased arousal, pain during intercourse, reduced sensation, or difficulty achieving orgasm — often tied to pelvic floor tension, hormonal changes, or nerve hypersensitivity. ShockWave Therapy (SoftWave) uses low-intensity electrohydraulic waves that penetrate deep into the soft tissue to activate your body’s natural healing response. This process improves circulation, stimulates nerve regeneration, and supports healthier tissue function. As blood flow and sensitivity improve, many patients experience enhanced performance, comfort, and confidence — without relying on medication or invasive treatments. This non-invasive, evidence-based approach works with your body to restore function from the inside out and support long-term sexual wellness. When combined with pelvic floor physical therapy, it becomes a powerful tool for improving overall pelvic health and sexual function.

Key Benefits of ShockWave Therapy for Sexual Dysfunction

  • Improves blood flow to support stronger, healthier arousal and function
  • Stimulates cellular repair and tissue regeneration
  • Encourages new blood vessel growth
  • Enhances sensitivity and sexual satisfaction
  • Reduces pain and inflammation
  • Non-invasive, drug-free, and requires no downtime

Expect During Your ShockWave Therapy

What To Expect During Your ShockWave Therapy Session

If you’re new to ShockWave Therapy for sexual dysfunction, here’s what to expect at Beyond Basics:
  1. Initial Consultation – Your physical therapist will review your medical history, discuss your symptoms, and determine whether ShockWave Therapy is an appropriate as part of your physical therapy plan.
  2. Treatment Application – A handheld device delivers gentle acoustic waves to targeted areas of the pelvic region. These waves stimulate blood flow, support tissue repair, and activate your body’s natural healing response.
  3. Mild Sensations – You might feel a light tapping or tingling sensation during treatment. Any brief discomfort usually indicates areas where circulation is limited.
  4. Immediate & Lasting Benefits – Some patients notice subtle improvement after the first session, while most experience more significant results over a series of treatments.
  5. Integrated Physical Therapy Approach: – At Beyond Basics, ShockWave Therapy is used in isolation. Each session is coordinated with your ongoing pelvic floor physical therapy to enhance circulation, address muscular tension, and reinforce functional gains through exercise and movement.
This combined approach offers a safe, drug-free path to improving sexual function by targeting two of the most common underlying factors—restricted blood flow and pelvic floor dysfunction—at the same time.

Are You a Candidate For ShockWave Therapy for Sexual Dysfunction?

ShockWave Therapy can support both men and women experiencing sexual dysfunction as part of a broader pattern of pelvic or sexual health concerns. It’s ideal for those seeking a non-invasive, natural approach to restoring function and comfort.
You may be a good candidate if:
  • You experience pain, reduced sensitivity, or difficulty with arousal or orgasm
  • You struggle to achieve or maintain erections or notice reduced vaginal sensation
  • You have circulation or vascular issues affecting sexual performance or comfort
  • You’ve had limited results with oral medications or other treatments
  • You prefer a drug-free, non-surgical option with no downtime or recovery period
  • You want to address underlying causes such as poor circulation, muscle tension, or nerve sensitivity
A personalized consultation with one of our pelvic floor physical therapists can help determine whether ShockWave Therapy—combined with individualized physical therapy—is right for you.

Why Combine ShockWave Therapy

Why Combine ShockWave Therapy with Physical Therapy

ShockWave Therapy helps restore healthy circulation and encourage healing in the pelvic region, which can make a meaningful difference for both men and women dealing with sexual dysfunction. When combined with pelvic floor physical therapy, it becomes even more effective.
This integrative approach helps improve muscle coordination, increase blood flow, and enhance nerve function—addressing the underlying causes of sexual dysfunction from multiple angles. At Beyond Basics Physical Therapy, we develop personalized treatment plans that combine both therapies to achieve long-term, sustainable results.

Advantages of Combining ShockWave Therapy with Physical Therapy for Sexual Dysfunction

  • Improved Blood Flow and Nerve Function: ShockWave Therapy enhances circulation and supports nerve regeneration, improving arousal, sensitivity, and overall function.
  • Pelvic Floor Strengthening and Relaxation: Physical therapy addresses weak, tight, or overactive muscles that contribute to pain, tension, or performance issues—restoring strength, flexibility, and control.
  • Faster and More Sustainable Progress: While ShockWave Therapy jumpstarts healing at the tissue level, physical therapy reinforces those gains through guided exercises, education, and behavior strategies.
  • Holistic, Drug-Free Approach: This combination avoids medications or surgery, focusing instead on your body’s natural ability to heal and perform.
  • Restored Confidence and Quality of Life: Addressing both the physical and functional components of sexual dysfunction helps individuals feel more comfortable, confident, and in control of their health and relationships.

After a life changing surgery back in 2013, I dealt with chronic pelvic and lower back pain that had impacted and hindered me for years. At one point, I lost all hope that I would ever be able to be rid of it. Then, I had the fortune of coming across Beyond Basics and meeting a wonderful physical therapist in the form of Kiko. After nearly 13 yrs of dealing with this pain, I am happy to say that it is completely gone after my treatment with Kiko. Because of her and Beyond Basics, I am now able to enjoy life so much more and for that, I am eternally gratefully. Coming here was truly a life changing experience.

I had a great experience working with Emily Moore for pre-op PT. She created an incredibly warm and inclusive environment and helped me feel comfortable from the start. In just a few sessions, she really helped me have a better understanding of my symptoms and how to best manage them. She gave me helpful tips to integrate into my daily routine and I noticed results almost immediately. I am looking forward to resuming sessions with her again after surgical recovery. The front desk and administrative staff were wonderful as well. I highly recommend working with Emily!

I recently saw Kiko for regular PT sessions following a c-section delivery and HIGHLY recommend her, she's the best!! We worked on regaining both pelvic floor and core strength, and while I'm happy both have improved significantly in the months since my delivery, I was sad to have 'graduated' PT as I really enjoyed my sessions with Kiko - she's a pleasure to work with and learn from! I also had a good experience with Beyond Basics as a practice - Veronica at the front desk is very sweet!
