Care For All Bodies
For close to twenty years, Beyond Basics has been dedicated to providing complete care for pelvic pain and pelvic floor dysfunction to patients of all ages in Jersey City. When we first started, pelvic floor physical therapy was a niche field with very few practitioners worldwide, and those who practiced it offered only limited treatment. Today, our clinic stands as one of the few globally that combines pelvic care with a broader understanding of the body, allowing us to support healing in a way that addresses the full person rather than isolated symptoms.
Through the extensive knowledge and advanced certifications of our physical therapists, we are prepared to assist you in addressing pain and dysfunction no matter where it occurs in your body. Each Jersey City patient receives an individualized care plan tailored to their specific needs, ensuring the most effective and supportive treatment possible.
Beyond Basics Physical Therapy is committed to fostering a culture of diversity, equality, and inclusion. Every individual in Jersey City is welcomed and respected, and our clinic enforces a zero-tolerance policy for any behavior that would compromise the safety or inclusivity of our environment.
We Understand Pelvic Floor Health
Anatomy of the Pelvic Floor
Function of the Pelvic Floor
- Bladder
- Uterus
- Rectum
- Bowel and bladder movements
- Functionality during sexual intercourse
- Blood circulation in the pelvic area
Causes Of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
-
Childbirth:
Pelvic floor muscles can be impacted by childbirth, particularly when labor is prolonged or when instruments such as forceps are used to assist delivery. Chronic Constipation:
Ongoing strain during bowel movements can cause weakening and reduced function of the pelvic floor over time.Pelvic Surgery:
Any prior surgical intervention in the pelvic region may create scar tissue or affect nerves, which can disrupt normal pelvic floor activity.Age-related Changes:
The natural aging process can reduce muscle tone and resilience in the pelvic floor, leading to diminished support and function.Obesity:
The additional weight carried by the body over time can place excessive pressure on the pelvic floor, increasing the risk of muscle strain.

Individualized Treatment Plans
Our physical therapists utilize an extensive range of therapeutic techniques, including both internal and external manual methods such as myofascial release, trigger point therapy, connective tissue manipulation, and craniosacral therapy. Where appropriate, gentle organ mobilization is performed to support functional improvement.
Biofeedback is regularly employed to assist in retraining the muscles and teaching patients exercises that can be practiced at home, ensuring steady progress and optimal outcomes.
We also apply a variety of complementary modalities, such as cold laser therapy, alternating heat and cold applications, electrical stimulation, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, to enhance therapeutic benefits.
Neuromuscular re-education remains central to our treatment philosophy, emphasizing exercises that restore muscle coordination and function for movements including standing, walking, and sitting, which encourages comfort and reduces risk of reinjury.
In collaboration with referring healthcare professionals, we design individualized exercise plans tailored to each patient’s needs. Our team also dedicates time weekly to professional development, ensuring our practice reflects the most current research and treatment innovations.
